Susan Smith Drowning, Susan Smith, the South Carolina mother who suffocated her children by moving their car into a lake, said she was "not the creature society supposes I am" after 20 years in a correctional facility.

Smith, who is serving a lifelong incarceration, did not plan to kill Alex, 14 months, and Michael, 3, in October 1994, the now-43-year-old told The State in a letter distributed Tuesday.

"Something turned out badly that night. I was not myself," Smith composed. "I was a decent mother and I adored my young men ... There was no thought process as it was not even a planned occasion. I was not in my right personality."

"I am not the creature society supposes I am. I am far from it."Smith, then 23, strapped her young men into the 1990 Mazda and then moved it into John D. Lake utilizing a ramp as a part of Union on Oct. 25, 1994.

Her case drew national attention when the white woman admitted to the wrongdoing days after telling law authorization a black man had carjacked her at gunpoint and drove off with the young men. She even went on national TV with her estranged husband to ask the "kidnapper" to bring back their children before they were discovered a week later.

Smith did not say in the letter why she claimed a black man was the culprit.Since the wrongdoing, individuals have speculated about the intention without answer. Initial reports indicated the secretary murdered her young men because she was having an affair with her manager's child, who severed it because he didn't want children.

"The thing that damages me the most is that individuals think I hurt my kids keeping in mind the end goal to be with a man," Smith said. "That is so far from reality."

Smith said she couldn't bear to inform her friends and family concerning her actions, so she planned to murder herself and leave the details in her suicide note.The letter, which was in light of a letter sent by the newspaper, was dated Jan. 19, 2015, however was not distributed until Tuesday, the day prior to the twentieth anniversary of her murder conviction.

Smith, who was part of a jail scandal in 2000 for allegedly having sex with two guards, said she wanted to finally recount to her side of the story after all this time.

"I have (not) yet possessed the capacity to speak on my behalf," Smith composed. "It's been hard to listen to lie after falsehood and not have the capacity to shield myself."

She closed down, "Earnestly, Susan."
