MARTA bus train Atlanta, Video released from an Atlanta MARTA bus being t-boned by a train shows the driver of the bus, realizing that the rear of his bus is still hanging on the tracks, feverishly honking his horn at vehicles that had congested the road in front of him. The May 14 collision of the speeding train swung the bus so violently that there was a double impact – first the back of the bus was crushed, which swung the front of the bus back into the side of the train cars.
Writes WSB-TV out of Atlanta: “MARTA officials said the bus crossed the train tracks on Welcome All Road to make a left onto Ben Hill Road. Traffic had backed up from the light and a portion of the bus was still on the tracks when the train crashed into it, according to MARTA officials. The bus was hit once, spun around and was hit again, MARTA officials said.”
Security video shows passengers, realizing that the train would smack the bus, crying out: “Train coming! Let me out!” While a few managed to get off before the bus was smashed by the freight engine, a number of individuals were injured, some seriously.
Officials confirmed that crossing gates and warning lights were functioning correctly. It appears that the bus pulled onto the CSX tracks in East Point outside of Atlanta, assuming the cars ahead of him would clear. When they didn’t, the train slammed into the MARTA bus. Five passengers were injured along with the bus driver, who was thrown out of his seat from the second collision.
The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority released footage from inside the bus, showing a few passengers quickly getting off in the front and center of the bus before the back end was smashed. One of those individuals, a 65-year-old man, remains hospitalized in serious condition after he was hit by the spinning bus.
The driver of the bus, MARTA employee Dwayne Magee, is seen desperately honking his horn at the traffic in front of him. Magee, who has worked for MARTA for nine years, was taken to the Atlanta Medical Center and released. He was made to undergo a mandatory drug and alcohol test, the results of which were not released. Magee is on paid leave as the incident is investigated.
Four of his other passengers were also hospitalized. One person was checked out at the scene and released.
