Manny Ramirez Viagra, There may be a little blue reason the Yankees faced stiff competition in the Red Sox during the 2004 American League Championship Series.
While recounting his favorite Manny Ramirez memories, former pitcher Pedro Martinez said the slugger once spiked alcohol Boston players drank before postseason games with Viagra.Ramirez had a bottle of Mama Juana sitting in his locker, according to the Hall of Famer, and told the Red Sox they were welcome to have some. But then, as Martinez said, Ramirez "went and doctored it."
"He put three 100 milligrams of Viagra in," a laughing Martinez told Seth Meyers while promoting his new book "Pedro."
Ramirez and a few players wanted someone to taste the concotion to see if it worked. We decided to let Ellis Burks try to taste it and I say, ‘You know, this Mama Juana, if you drink it, you might get turned on,' " Martinez recalled. "He said, ‘Oh, I’ll try it. I’ll try it. I’m not playing anyway.’ So he took it, it seemed like it worked. So everybody was coming up to him for a little shot.”
The Red Sox went on to win the ALCS and their first World Series in 86 years.
The anecdote is just another amusing tale to come out of the season of the self-proclaimed "Idiots," however, Viagra does have off-label uses for athletes since it first went on the market in 1998. It helps build endurance and can deliver oxygen, nutrients and performance-enhancing drugs to muscles more efficiently.
But Major League Baseball does not list Sildenafil, which goes by Viagra and other names, as a banned substance.
