Disgraced Utah teacher pleads guilty to sex with three teenage boys, avoids 11 other felony counts, A Utah teacher, whose string of sexual exploits with underage students were a "running joke" at Davis High School, pleaded guilty to sex with three boys in Davis County court.
Brianne Altice, 35, accepted a plea deal to admit to three counts of second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse on Wednesday in exchange for prosecutors dismissing 11 other counts, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Altice could have been subject to four separate trials had she not agreed to the deal.
"What changed things was the judge's ruling that each case should be heard separately and each case would be considered on its own merits without reference to the other cases," defense attorney Ed Brass told FOX 13.The ex-English teacher faces between three to 45 years in prison and will be sentenced May 28.
"I'm not sure that I'm happy that from 14 felonies, it's gone down to three, but at least she did admit that she was guilty," one victim's mother told KSL.
Two of the victims' families have filed civil suits against the school district. Her risqué behavior became well-known among students, according to one pending lawsuit.
"Who is Ms. Altice sleeping with now?" was a common source of gossip among students, one suit states, according to The Tribune.
Prosecutors alleged that Altice, who was married at the time, had sex with three different boys ages 16 and 17, beginning in November 2013.She met them separately, and what began as kissing in her Kaysville, Ut., classroom evolved into sex at parks as well as in her car.
Her guilty plea ends an ordeal that saw Altice go to jail, lose her job and destroy her marriage.
"This resolution does meet the needs of justice," Deputy Davis County Attorney Susan Hunt told the Tribune, "but lets us deal with the risks, had the cases gone to trial."
