Cocaine and opiate found in 13-month-old baby girl who died in upstate New York: report

Cocaine and opiate found in 13-month-old baby girl who died in upstate New York: report , A 13-month-old girl in upstate New York had cocaine and an opiate in her system when she died in February, according to autopsy results.

Police are now waiting for further tests to determine if the drugs caused the death of little Kayleigh Cassell of Kingsbury, the Glens Falls Post-Star reportedWednesday. It’s still unclear how the drugs got into the baby girl’s system.

Kayleigh was found dead Feb. 22 in a home owned by her mother’s boyfriend’s mother. Tiny, empty envelopes that appeared to be used for drugs were found in the bedroom were Kayleigh slept with her mom, Rachel Ball, and her mom’s boyfriend, Joshua Bennett. Ball, Bennett and several of Bennett's children from previous relationships were in the house that day.

Ball, 27, and Bennett, 34, are both facing felony drug charges for heroin and cocaine that was found in the home. Neither has been charged for the baby’s death.

Ball appeared in court Wednesday and refused to speak about the disturbing autopsy findings, but her aunt expressed outrage to the Post-Star.

“We want to know, how did she get it?” June Terpening said about Kayleigh. “Was it an accident, or was it given to her intentionally?”

Terpening claimed Ball was sleeping hours before Kayleigh was found dead, and Bennett was with the girl during those hours.Ball blamed her boyfriend for getting her addicted to heroin and cocaine and said he sold the drugs to others, according to court records. She said the two often got into aggressive arguments, and did so the night before Kayleigh’s death. Ball also admitted the two often used a mix of the drugs, and took that deadly mix shortly before their baby’s death.

Ball said her daughter had visible bruises on her face and neck when she was found dead. She also said Kayleigh was "sick" in the days before her death, and that the girl was complaining about her left arm hurting after Bennett had grabbed it during a fight.
