Crazy colorful hats on parade at 139th running of Kentucky Derby, It is one of the main hat fashion events of the season as over-the-top styles of crazy and colorful hats will parade today at the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby, Saturday, May 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. ET on NBC.
Wearing just the right hat to get noticed at the run for the roses at Churchill Downs dates back to 1875 during the first running of the Kentucky Derby. Now 138 years later wearing just the right hat is still a big part of all the fanfare which includes sipping on a mint julep.
The Early Times Mint Julep Recipe
• 2 cups sugar
• 2 cups water
• Sprigs of fresh mint
• Crushed ice
• Early Times Kentucky Whisky
• Silver Julep Cups
Today’s race which usually features 20 horses will post with 19 after Black Onyx was scratched from the race and also marks the first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
During the annual “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” hearts will break, bets will be lost but having been a part of one of the greatest hat spectacles in the world will not disappoint.
"It's theater ... a grand, glorious stage and anyone can participate," said Sally Faith Steinmann, owner and milliner for Maggie Mae Designs.
