Five Georgia Southern

Five Georgia Southern, Five nursing students died and two were injured in a seven-vehicle crash on a Georgia interstate, officials said.


The accident Wednesday on Interstate 16 near Savannah involved three tractor trailers, two pickup trucks and two cars, state police told NBC affiliate WSAV. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, and another died at the hospital, the station reported.

Georgia Southern University identified the five dead students, all juniors, as Emily Clark, Morgan Bass, Abbie Deloach, Catherine (McKay) Pittman and Caitlyn Baggett. The injured were Brittney McDaniel and Megan Richards. They were enrolled in the nursing program, WSAV reported.

"The loss of any student, especially in a tragic way, is particularly painful. Losing five students is almost incomprehensible," University President Brooks Keel said in a statement.
