Chelsea offered Kai Havertz transfer boost with Bayern Munich not targeting another major summer deal
Chelsea offered Kai Havertz transfer boost with Bayern Munich not targeting another major summer deal, Chelsea look to have been offered a clear path to the signing of Kai Havertz, with Bayern Munich no longer hoping to sign the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker.
Havertz has become the focus of Frank Lampard's summer transfer attentions following deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner as he looks to strengthen his squad for a Premier League title push next season following two successive windows with no new recruits.
Standard Sport understands that Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of the German international after securing Champions League qualification for next season and a fourth-placed domestic finish following a final day win over Wolves.
Havertz has informed Leverkusen of his desire to move to Stamford Bridge, with the Blues hoping to seal a deal worth approximately £70million.
They had hoped to secure that signing before the return of the Europa League, with the player now back in training with Leverkusen, who are reluctant to sell and have made it repeatedly clear that he will feature in the climax of the continent's secondary club competition.
Leverkusen host Steven Gerrard's Rangers in the second leg of their last-16 tie at BayArena on Thursday evening.
But while an agreement is yet to be reached, Chelsea can at least take solace from the fact that Bayern Munich - who have made a habit of snapping up the best Bundesliga talent over the years from their dominant position as reigning champions - appear to have exited the race for Havertz following the £44.5m arrival of Leroy Sane from Manchester City.
"I am sure that after Leroy Sane there will be no major transfers this year," honorary president Uli Hoeness told German newspaper FAZ.
"That has nothing to do with the quality of Havertz. We all think he is a very, very good player.
"But in the Corona period after a transfer of almost 50 million, one of 70, 80 million or more I can't imagine making unless we secure counter-financing through player sales."
