Bad Brains Dr. Know

Bad Brains Dr. Know, Bad Brains guitarist Dr. Know, real name Gary Miller, is reportedly in the hospital and on life support, according to social media posts by the band, author Greg Tate and others.

While news of Miller's hospitalization has been circulating since as early as Sunday night, Bad Brains posted on Facebook today: "The Bad Brains family ask that you please keep Gary (Dr. Know) Miller in your thoughts and prayers. The family respectfully ask that their privacy be honored during this time and very much appreciate all the great energy that is being sent their way."

Tate, a Rolling Stone contributor, wrote on Facebook about Dr. Know's hospitalization on Sunday. He said he learned about Miller's condition from a post by 24-7 Spyz guitarist Jimi Hazel.

"Just saw this troubling note from Jimi Hazel about Dr. Know of The Bad Brains," Tate wrote before quoting Hazel. "'Please join me in sending massive amounts of prayer and PMA [positive mental attitude] for Dr. Know, who is fighting for his life at this very moment. Please, ask me no questions. Just send all the love that you can for my brother in wires … Love, prayers and healing energies we send out for the recovered health, well being and longevity of our brother Dr. Know. Strength and blessings to his entire extended family as well.'"Michael "Mickey" Melchiondo, Jr. of the Dean Ween group, and formerly Ween, also posted on Facebook that he had heard of Miller's hospitalization. "Pray for him, or at least smoke a huge spliff and keep him in your thoughts," read the note. "One of my fave guitarists of the era — and always."

Living Colour's Corey Glover echoed the sentiment, writing: "Sending #PMA healing vibes, and positive energy to #DrKnow of #BadBrains — I urge you to do the same."

While Bad Brains have not released any new music since their 2012 album, Into the Future, Dr. Know has remained busy in recent years. As Brooklyn Vegan reports, he performed at New York City's annual Black N' Blue hardcore festival in May as part of the Regulators, while joining Bad Brains soonafter for an installment of the ongoing Woodstock Sessions series.

In July, Dr. Know also took the stage with Foo Fighters in New York City, bashing out Bad Brains covers with the punk outfit's bassist Darryl Jenifer as well. Last year, the pair discussed the hardcore scene they came out of in the Washington D.C. episode of Dave Grohl's HBO docu-series, Sonic Highways.
