Goosebumps' scares up big box office, With Halloween just around the corner it's that time of year when ghosts and goblins are plentiful on the big screen.
This weekend it was the PG-rated thrills of "Goosebumps" versus the creepy R-rated "Crimson Peak" in theaters across the country.
The family flick won out, as the movie inspired by R.L. Stine's popular young adult book series made $23.5 million this weekend, winning the box office in Sunday's estimates.
Jack Black stars in the the film as Stine himself in a tale in which the monsters in his books come to life.Guillermo del Toro's latest, "Crimson Peak" failed to garner as much audience interest despite a cast including Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain. The costume drama/horror movie made less than $13 million, which was enough to earn it fourth place at the box office (the budget was $55 million, according to Box Office Mojo).
"Bridge of Spies," from Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks, debuted in third place with more than $15 million. With that film being a potential Oscar nominee, the expectations are that "Bridge of Spies" will continue to bring in audiences over several weeks.
After two weeks on top, "The Martian" slipped to second with $21.5 million, and its total domestic gross is closing in on $150 million.
"Pan," widely seen as a box office disaster, slipped out of the top 5, losing 61% of its audience from last week, making under $6 million this weekend.
Here is a list of the top 5 films this weekend:
