Eddie Murphy imitates Bill Cosby while accepting Mark Twain Prize for Humor, Eddie Murphy accepted the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor over the weekend, imitating Bill Cosby in his first stand-up comedy set in 28 years as part of the process.
“You may have heard recently that I allegedly put the pill in people’s stomach,” Murphy said, putting on his best Cosby impression. According to the Washington Post, he later added the line, “If I ever see or meet this Hannibal Buress in person, I am going to try and kill this man!”
Buress, of course, is the comedian who brought mainstream attention to the Cosby allegations during a stand-up set he performed here in Philadelphia in October 2014. A year later, more than 50 women have accused the embattled comedian of sexual assault.
Murphy’s Cosby impression first became famous in the late 1980s, following the release of the comedian’s beloved Raw special. In it, Murphy relays a story of Cosby discouraging his use of foul language in his sets, which Richard Pryor didn’t like too much.
The comedian has remained silent on the Cosby allegations since they began ramping up last year, with Murphy even turning down a chance to do his Cosby impression on the Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary special back in February. Last week, he addressed that decision in an interview with the Washington Post.
“It’s horrible,” he said. “There’s nothing funny about it. If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you’re just hurting people. You’re hurting him. You’re hurting his accusers. I was like, 'Hey, I’m coming back to SNL for the anniversary, I’m not turning my moment on the show into this other thing.' ”
This weekend, however, seemed a little different. Though, as Arsenio Hall told the Washington Post, Murphy’s decision was not flippant, saying that “Cosby [is] gonna get sick of this soon, he’s gonna get sick of people hating, and eventually he’s gonna have to say something.”
“Bill had one of these. Did you all make him give it back?,” Murphy said of his award Sunday before breaking into his Cosby impression. “I would like to talk to some of the people who feel like I should give back my motherf------ trophies.”
