Bay State Shipwreck, The Bay State shipwreck that has long evaded researchers, was found sitting at the bottom of Lake Ontario. After the old ship encountered a storm in its path, it ripped apart and sank. A team of New York-based shipwreck hunters discovered the vessel.Jim Kennard and Roger Pawlowski found the Bay State shipwreck hundreds of feet deep underwater located about seven miles off Fair Haven in New York, which is 155 miles west of Albany.
The Chicago Tribune reports on October 21 that the 137-foot-long Bay State departed Oswego back in November 1862 and was carrying cargo headed for Ohio. The ship's captain decided to turn back when an oncoming storm became a gale. Kennard says: "That was the beginning of the end."
As conditions worsened, the ship started coming apart with sections of the upper decks collapsing. A trail of debris was left and there were at least 18 people killed, though no record was kept of exactly how many crewmen and passengers were aboard. The captain did indicate that there were at least four crewman from Oswego.
The Bay State ship was built in 1852 in Buffalo, and was one of the earliest models of propeller-driven steamers.
The Bay State shipwreck was discovered by video equipment on a remotely operated vehicle. Images were captured of the steamer before the device got lodged on some debris. A month later, divers with deep-water gear were able to make their way to the wreck.
Next year Kennard and Pawlowski want to return to the scene so they can capture more images of the Bay State shipwreck ... especially the steamer engine and propellers.
