Robert Redford, Jane Fonda Team for Film Adaptation of ‘Our Souls at Night’, Robert Redford and Jane Fonda would reunite onscreen in a film adaptation of Kent Haruf’s poignant final novel, “Our Souls at Night,” in a deal close to being finalized by Mr. Redford’s Wildwood Enterprises, according to a person familiar with the discussions.
Mr. Haruf, best known for his best-selling novel “Plainsong,” wrote “Our Souls at Night” last year as he was dying of lung disease. It is a story about finding love late in life, inspired by his relationship with his second wife, Cathy Haruf. Mr. Haruf died at home in Salida, Colo., on Nov. 30. The novel was published in May.
Wildwood Enterprises is close to signing a deal with Mr. Haruf’s estate for the film rights, said the person familiar with the discussions. Mr. Redford hoped to bring on Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the screenwriting team behind “The Fault in Our Stars,” to write the screenplay, this person said.
Deadline, which first reported the news, also said that Netflix was in discussions on backing the project. A Netflix spokeswoman declined to comment.
Mr. Redford, 79 years old, and Ms. Fonda, 77, starred together in “Barefoot in the Park” (1967) and in “The Electric Horseman” (1979).
“Our Souls at Night,” set in the same fictional Colorado town as his “Plainsong” trilogy, opens with a 70-year-old widow named Addie Moore, knocking on the door of a longtime neighbor. She asks if he would like to come to her house at night to lie in bed—not for sex, but to talk and fall asleep together.
Mr. Redford currently has two movies out: “A Walk in the Woods” and “Truth,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend. Ms. Fonda is currently starring in the Netflix series “Grace and Frankie,” alongside Lily Tomlin.
