PSV v Manchester United: Champions League – live!, It’s not all bad news for Manchester United: the two bits of consolation they can take from this evening is that (a) they dominated throughout and (b) Manchester City have also lost, going down 2-1 at home to Juventus. Meanwhile back at the Philips Stadion, Hector Moreno and Luciano Narsingh bagged the goals for PSV as they came from behind to take all three points after Memphis Depay had opened the scoring for the visitors on his return to his old stomping ground. Tonight’s result has been overshadowed by a serious injury to Luke Shaw, who was stretchered off after suffering a horrendous leg-break. We wish him all the very best in what we hope is a speedy recovery.
PEEP! PEEP! PEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!! It’s all over. I’m not sure how Manchester United managed to lose that match, but lose it they have. It’s been a disastrous for United, who have lost Luke Shaw to what looks like a badly broken leg and will leave the Philips Stadion without a point after allowing an impressively resilient PSV to come from behind and beat them.
90+1 min: Manchester United win a free-kick in the channel between left touchline and PSV penalty area, which they waste through unnecessary faffing. Nothing comes of it ... apart from another PSV counter-attack. Nairsingh rides Bastian Schweinsteiger’s tackle and finds himself though on goal, only to pick the pass instead of the shot and gift possession back to United.
89 min: PSV’s fans roar their team on, as Fellaini and Mata attempt to combine on the edge of the penalty area. Fellaini passes to Mata, who passes back to Fellaini ... nobody seems to want to take responsibility for shooting.
88 min: Manchester United continue to huff and puff, but to no avail. PSV are holding firm in defence for now.
84 min: PSV substitution: Locadia on for Lestienne, who’s been excellent. Man Utd substitution: Valencia on for Young.
83 min: PSV almost extend their lead, with Maxime Lestienne displaying great energy to go on a marauding run down the left flank before unleashing a shot that goes straight down David De Gea’s throat. The PSV winger should perhaps have squared the ball for Luuk De Jong, who was up in support.
81 min: With less than 10 minutes to go, Manchester United continue to dominate. “They’ve had so much of the ball, so many chances ... there’s a naivety there, it’s almost like they don’t know how to win. When you have that much possession you shouldn’t be losing,” says Michael Owen in the BT commentary box. He’s not wrong.
78 min: The home crowd are in high spirits, possibly a mite unsure how exactly they happen to be winning this match. Having gone a goal down, the jigged looked up for them, but having capitalised on some sloppy play, they’ve managed to score from a corner and through a wonderful counter-attack after being gifted possession by Juan Mata, who went on to miss a glorious opportunity to level the scores.
76 min: With Daley Blind up on an overlap, Marcos Rojo plays the ball out to him on the left-flank. Without attempting to control the ball, Blind attempts to send in a cross on the fly, but his wild slash sends the ball arcing high and wide out of play.
