NYPD releases video footage of bogus takedown arrest of tennis great James Blake, On September 11, the New York Police Department shared the video surveillance footage depicting the body slam takedown and arrest of former professional tennis star James Blake.
That video footage shows Blake standing peacefully outside the Grand Hyatt Hotel in midtown Manhattan waiting for a ride to a U.S. Open event when a plainclothes NYPD detective ran up to him and tackled him to the pavement, according to a report from MSN.In a case of mistaken identity, the undercover cop tackling and arresting Blake mistook the former tennis great for a suspect wanted in an ongoing fraud investigation. Blake suffered minor injuries in the assault, including bruises to his leg and a cut to his elbow.
Fox News identified the plainclothes officer as James Frascatore. The video shows Frascatore running up to Blake, grabbing him, swinging him to the sidewalk and then cuffing him. It wasn’t too long after Blake was taken into custody that the NYPD realized that they arrested the wrong man.
You can see the video surveillance footage of Blake’s takedown and arrest here. Frascatore is currently on desk duty while the department investigates Blake’s arrest.
Although Blake, 38, later said in interviews that he didn’t feel as if he was racially profiled in the bogus arrest, he did say that he’d at least appreciate an apology from the NYPD. You can catch portions of his interview after being released from custody in the video accompanying this article.
William Bratton, NYPD Commissioner, said that Blake could have been his fraud suspect’s twin. Bratton and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio have since issued formal apologies to the tennis star for the mistaken identify arrest.
