Nurses, reality star fire back at ‘The View’ after comments about Miss Colorado, Nurses across America are upset and firing back at a few hosts on “The View.” The episode of “The View,” which aired Monday, showed co-hosts Michelle Collins and Joy Behar mocking the monologue given by Miss Colorado during the Miss America Pageant. Nurses, including a reality TV star, have stepped up against the show to explain why their comments were inappropriate and ignorant. Social media has been seeing tons of nurses unite and share their support for Miss Colorado.
Michelle Collins began the mockery when she pointed out that Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, stepped out in her nurse’s uniform to give a monologue about nursing. She said she turned the volume up because she just knew it was going to be good. While Collins acknowledged that taking care of patients with Alzheimer’s is a good thing she also said, “She basically read her emails out loud and shockingly did not win." Joy Behar followed up the mockery by adding in, "Why does she have a doctor's stethoscope on?" These comments set in motion a social media frenzy of backlash against the hosts.
Twitter, Instagram and Facebook were all sources nurses went to in order to educate the hosts on why their comments were distasteful and not accurate at all. Doctors are not the only ones in the healthcare profession who wear stethoscopes. Nurses check their patients routinely and several times daily with stethoscopes in order to hear lung, bowel and heart sounds. Intensive care nurses check nearly every hour if not more. Nurses are trained to know what sounds normal and what does not. Doctors depend on nurses to assess and report to them any changes they see in their patients since they obviously cannot care for each patient at all times.
“Married at First Sight” star Jamie Otis is also a nurse. She spoke out as well on the trending issue. Otis took to her Instagram page on Wednesday to share her view on the subject. She posted a picture of herself in her scrubs and said, “What's my talent? I'm a nurse. (This is during a rare break-my stethoscopes in my locker.) #ProudNurse #NursesUnite” She also shared how she loves being a nurse and some of the feelings she has from being one. She talked about special moments she has shared with babies coming into this world and elderly patients leaving it.
Nurses across the country are wanting and deserve an apology from “The View.” Their comments clearly underestimate how valuable and important a nurse’s role is in the world of healthcare. Nurses work as a team with doctors and other medical staff to ensure everyone’s loved ones are being cared for. This care includes using a stethoscope.
