NFL says Patriots had nothing to do with headset malfunctions, The NFL quickly and decisively squashed a New England Patriots controversy before it got too big, saying the team had nothing to do with malfunctioning headsets in Thursday night's game.
A lot of time, money and energy would have been saved had the league done something similar last January. But I digress. The latest thing that had people freaked out was the Steelers' headsets not working properly in the first quarter of the season opener. The Steelers' coach-to-coach headsets were getting the Patriots' radio broadcast piped into them. The Patriots had issues with the headsets too, but that got pretty much lost in all the talk about the Patriots being up to no good again. When Steelers coach Mike Tomlin insinuated that things like that always happen at Gillette Stadium, it got everyone buzzing.
The NFL put it all to rest. It was just an electrical issue. The Patriots had nothing to do with it. Move along.
"Based on our review to date, we believe that the audio interference on Steelers’ headsets last night was entirely attributable to an electrical issue made worse by the inclement weather; that it involved no manipulation by any individual; and that the Patriots had nothing to do with it," the NFL said in a statement, via the Boston Herald. "The issue was promptly resolved and there were no further problems for the remainder of the game. We will continue to review the matter to determine if there are technical steps that can be taken to avoid similar problems from occurring in other games."
Will the Steelers buy that? Probably not, because paranoia about the Patriots is at a fever pitch. And will it calm those who don't root for the Patriots and were screaming all Thursday night and Friday about how the Patriots are no-good cheaters and this headset controversy once again proves they should have all their Super Bowl trophies taken away? Nah.
