Monique Bastos Robbers, Monique Bastos is a strawweight MMA fighter in Brazil. She was walking to her jiu-jitsu training with two friends in Brazil on Tuesday night when two men attacked the group, asking for their phones.
Bastos realized the men weren’t armed and proceeded to attack them. As you might imagine, the unsuspecting robbers were taken by surprise and things didn’t quite end in their favor. That’s Bastos holding one of the robbers in a triangle choke headlock. She told MMAFighting.com that she used a rear-naked choke to get him to the ground in the first place before keeping him there with the triangle maneuver. Perfect.
She described the situation to MMAFighting.com in her own words.
“I was going to my jiu-jitsu training when they arrived on a motorcycle and said they wanted our phones,” Bastos said. “I tried to hold my phone, and I realized they were not armed. When they tried to escape, I lifted the rear wheel of the bike and they fell on the ground. The guy who took my phone ran away, but I was able to get the other one.”
This wasn’t the first time she’s stopped an attempted robbery.
“I’ve been through this a few times before, and it’s the second time I fought back,” she said. “There were two guys, and they were using knives, but I was able to use my jiu-jitsu and get my phone back. It’s a huge risk, but I did it to defend myself and my friends, so I used what I learned.”
Bastos isn’t currently under contract, though she has six professional MMA fights under her belt. Paging Dana White: Get this girl in the octagon.
