Monica Foy Tweet, Texas SHSU student Monica Foy's mean tweet at a slain deputy Darren Goforth bit her back. The Houston Chronicle reported September 3 that Foy, 26 and a student at Sam Houston State University, tweeted that she didn't get the fuss over a dead cop. She was referencing Harris County deputy Darren Goforth's shooting death. Foy hinted that he might have had it coming and that Goforth had "creepy perv eyes." But as they say, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Her indelicate Twitter post sent people searching into Foy's own past.
Foy deleted her inflammatory post, but not fast enough. The ensuing brouhaha flushed out an outstanding arrest warrant on Foy for bodily harm. The girl's dad Andrew Foy isn't too happy with her either. He sent a letter to KTRH saying how ashamed he is of his daughter but adds she made a stupid mistake putting agenda before decency. Her tweeted was supposed to be in solidarity with the BlackLivesMatter crusade. She's since deleted her profile.
As for the warrant, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Brady Fitzgerald said the office got a call saying Foy was wanted outside Harris County, for assault causing bodily harm. Foy was arrested at home after sheriff's deputies searched the system and found the warrant. Foy was bonded out shortly after being taken into custody. Fitzgerald said the charge will likely be misdemeanor A. Foy's school issued a statement in response to the incident on the SHSU Facebook page, saying it's glad to see the public supporting law enforcement on social media.
Interestingly, though SHSU didn't blackball Foy. The university says it also supports constitutional rights to free speech. SHSU says it's about educating people who work in criminal justice and those who protect the civil liberties this country was founded on. Among the rights public defenders defend is the First Amendment right to freedom of speech. And that includes "whether we agree with that speech or not."
