Kris Silbaugh, One-Handed High School Football Player, Breaks Records, Kris Silbaugh, a high school football player in Pennsylvania, set a school record last week for all-time receiving yardage despite being born with one hand.
Silbaugh, who plays at Cambridge Springs High School, caught a 43-yard touchdown pass during a 63-0 victory over Saegertown on Friday, giving him the all-time receiving yardage mark at 915 yards, USA Today reported.
"It went from the guys being excited to see if he could actually do something to them counting on him to make plays," Justin Grubbs, a Cambridge Springs assistant coach, told USA Today. "It's just amazing to see what he's able to do. He makes catches that you wouldn't believe. He's a guy that defenses have to have a game plan for and he’s just so fast."
Silbaugh's 40-yard dash time of 4.4 seconds puts him in the five-star recruiting prospects at Nike's football camp for top high school football players in the country.
Silbaugh, who is a junior with 38 career catches, now has his eyes on the school's career receptions record of 57, according to Sporting News. The publication stated that Silbaugh also plays basketball and volleyball at the school.
"I definitely want all of the records I can get," the teen told USA Today. "It's crazy that, at first, no one knew me and now I get the best guy in the secondary all the time. I still feel like I have to prove people wrong because there's always someone in the stands that hasn't seen me play. I know that people will always be shocked at what I'm able to do because I only have one hand, but my goal is to be known as a dominant player, period."
Silbaugh is reminiscent of former New York Yankees pitcher Jim Abbott, who was born without one hand and went on to a successful professional baseball career that included a no-hitter in 1993, according to USA Today's "For the Win" blog.
The high schooler said that, while he believes in his abilities, he wants to win above all else.
"I'm pretty confident because of my speed and I just feel like every ball is a catchable ball for me," he said. "I've been getting a few letters from colleges, but I'm just focusing on the season. I just want to help the team in any way that I can."
