Kim Davis supporters show up to Kentucky jail to plead for anti-gay Rowan County clerk’s release, Supporters of the Kentucky county clerk jailed for defying a federal judge’s order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples called Saturday for her release.
About 200 people gathered outside a jail in Grayson, Ky., to protest the imprisonment of Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis.
The thrice-divorced born-again Christian was ordered to jail after she said her religious beliefs prevent her from signing same-sex licenses. She has refused to issue any at all since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay unions in June.
Protesters held up signs that read “Freedom of religion,” “Kim Davis for President,” and “Free Kim Davis!” as they were joined by Grayson Mayor George Steele.
“God is going to continue to bless Kim Davis,” Steele said before leading the group in prayer.A bagpipe and drum corp from the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property joined the protest and played “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”
Several of the supporters traveled from as far as Maryland and Ohio.
In Davis’ absence Friday, deputy clerks issued marriage licenses to at least four same-sex couples. Her lawyer said the licenses would not be valid because they were issued over Davis’ objection. He said Davis has no intention of resigning from her $80,000 a year job.
