Inderjit Singh Mukker

Inderjit Singh Mukker, Inderjit Singh Mukker was beaten in Chicago in an apparent hate crime. On Thursday, Washington Post shared that Mukker was actually put in the hospital after being punched by his attacker. He was simply on his way to the grocery store when a vehicle was tailgating him. Inderjit was dressed like normal wearing a turban and he does have a beard.

Mukker pulled over so that he could let the other person pass him. The person screamed at him calling him Bin Laden and telling him to retrun to his country. The next thing he knew the man was in his window punching him repeatedly. He had to be taken to the hospital and was even unconscious. Mukker ended up with a fractured cheekbone, bruising and blood loss and six stitches for the cuts on his face.

Police have the suspect in custody and are looking at this as a hate crime. Mukker gave a statement saying "No American should be afraid to practice their faith in our country. I’m thankful for the swift response of authorities to apprehend the individual, but without this being fully investigated as a hate crime, we risk ignoring the horrific pattern of intolerance, abuse and violence that Sikhs and other minority communities in this country continue to face."

Simran Jeet Singh, a senior religion fellow at the Coalition, spoke out saying that hate crimes like this have increased since 9/11. He shared that people see a beard and turban and then assume terrorist even if that is not the case.
