Hipster Barbie’ a big hit on Instagram, As if Portlandia didn't skewer the Pacific Northwest enough, now there’s a Barbie for that.
Socality Barbie is effortlessly cool, a hipster to the highest degree...and a hilarious parody of the real hipsters plaguing Instagram. With her dark-framed glasses and knit beanie, Socality Barbie is relatable to all of us who’ve spent hours choosing the perfect filter to capture the beauty of the nature. ("Socality" refers to a crunchy, Earth-loving branch of Christianity who uses social media to spread the Gospel—although Socality Barbie rarely makes references to religion.) Unsurprisingly, the genius woman behind the account—a wedding photographer who chose to remain anonymous—is from Portland, Oregon, which is arguably the hipster capital of America. According to Wired, she created the account three months ago as a way to poke fun at the plethora of Instagrams making misguided attempts at authenticity.
“People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions,” she told Wired. “I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?'”
And make a point she does: The angles, the filters, the latte art—it all rings true to us millennials who have at least one friend with an eerily similar Insta. This relatability is the reason for Socality Barbie’s success, the creator says, with almost 10,000 followers so far.A photo posted by Socality Barbie (@socalitybarbie) on Aug 21, 2015 at 10:18am PDT
Despite the undeniable beauty of the locales for many Portland-based hipsters’ favorite Instagram shots, Socality Barbie’s creator says “it’s so overdone that it’s becoming boring,” adding that “nobody actually lives like this.”
It’s a feeling we all know well: Seeing one person’s over-the-top, beautiful Instagram feed, and thinking “How on earth is your life so perfect?” Socality Barbie just might be the heroine that we need.
