Carnival ends cruise early after ship fire, Guests aboard the Carnival Liberty are using complimentary shuttles to beaches and other tourist destinations on St. Thomas while the 3,400-passenger ship remains in the port for inspections following an engine room fire Sept. 7. The Carnival Cruise Line ship was on the second day of its seven-day Caribbean cruise when the blaze broke out while docked in St. Thomas. The ship departed from San Juan Sept. 6.
A statement from Carnival Cruise Line says the fire was extinguished by the ship’s automated suppression system, and there were no injuries to guests or crew. The ship was evacuated after the incident and all guests remained ashore through the evening while the ship's technical systems were evaluated. All hotel services including air conditioning, elevators, toilets, galleys, etc. are fully functional.
The line says that crew members reboarded the ship around 5:30 p.m., and guests embarked a few hours later, after the U.S. Coast Guard gave the all-clear. But a team of experts is still in the process of conducting a deeper technical assessment of the affected engine room that is expected to be completed today. Carnival has not determined when the ship will depart St. Thomas.
Guests were invited to spend the day ashore if they wished and the company is providing complimentary shuttle service to popular areas on the island along with a $150 per person shipboard credit. “We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and appreciate their patience,” the line says in a statement.
Carnival Liberty entered service in 2005 and was one of the first Fun Ships to be outfitted with the line's Fun Ship 2.0 amenities, such as Guy's Burger Joint, the Alchemy Bar and the RedFrog Rum Bar after those popular venues debuted on Carnival Magic in 2011.
