Azarenka's bandages set Twitter world abuzz

Azarenka's bandages set Twitter world abuzz, What are those weird, box-shape bandages for that Victoria Azarenka wore on her arms Monday at the U.S. Open?

Blisters.

Monday Azarenka set the tennis Twitter world abuzz with a pair of bandages on her upper arm, the tape reaching to the underside of her bicep but not covering the outside of her arms.

“I got blisters from rubbing against my shirt,” Azarenka sheepishly told Rennae Stubbs in an on-court interview on ESPN after beating Varvara Lepchenko.

“It’s a little embarrassing,” she added.

Perhaps more embarrassing for Nike, the maker of Azarenka’s on-court attire. Azarenka is donning a sleeveless top and shorts this year at the Open, a look she has patented as her own the last few seasons.

The former world No. 1 and two-time U.S. Open champion is into the quarterfinal for the fourth consecutive year. She’s face No. 2 seed Simona Halep or Germany’s Sabine Lisicki.

Azarenka tried to play off the strangeness with a joke on court.

“The cool version [of the story] is that I threw a football yesterday and I felt like I should be like a quarterback a little bit,” she said, laughing. “Bring a little of style.”

“It’s so weird. I never had that, but I had to do what I had to do,” she continued. “I like the cooler version. Like an NFL star.”

“Maybe just a little bit of [an] allergic reaction to a material or something, or dryness,” Azarenka later told reporters in press. “I don't know. It's just like burning sensation when I touch it. It's kind of like a blister. So I just put the tape around so it doesn't bother me.”

Will she seek out a new outfit ahead of her next match?

“I’m going to look for something that matches a little better,” she said. “I got to keep my swag on.”
