Accused FIU foot sniffer taken into custody, A man accused of hiding under a table and smelling a student's feet at Florida International University's main campus was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon.Sky 10 was above the scene shortly before 5 p.m. at Southwest 97th Court and Southwest 59th Street as Miami-Dade police arrested the man, identified as Eddy Juan, 52, after an attempted traffic stop.
FIU police warned students this week about a man who was seen "crawling underneath a table in a suspicious manner" at the Green Library.FIU police spokesman David Navas said in a statement that the man appeared to smell the feet of an unsuspecting female student sitting at the table.
Miami-Dade police said a man matching his description was spotted riding a scooter in the area of Southwest 51st Street and Southwest 104th Avenue.
Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the scooter driver attempted to flee and then crashed at Southwest 59th Street and Southwest 79th Court, police said.
FIU Police Chief Alex Casas said Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers received multiple tips leading to the suspect's identity. Casas said someone recognized the man and called Miami-Dade police.
Miami-Dade police said Juan was taken into custody without further incident. He faces charges of violation of sexual offender registration, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, aggravated assault and resisting without violence.
FIU spokeswoman Dianne Fernandez said nobody was hurt in the incident and there have been no other reports.
