Reggie Wayne Agrees to Deal With Patriots

Reggie Wayne Agrees to Deal With Patriots,  The good folks at ESPN's Stats & Information have put together an all-encompassing packet on veteran receiver Reggie Wayne and the New England Patriots. Wayne agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the team on Monday.

Enjoy.

Did you Know? Patriots coach Bill Belichick gets to coach Wayne for the first time since the 2011 Pro Bowl (Jan. 30, 2011) when they were on the AFC squad during a 55-41 defeat to the NFC. Here’s what Belichick has been quoted saying over the years on Reggie Wayne:

November 2009: “I mean, I can’t say enough about Reggie Wayne. That guy is the best receiver we cover every year, and it seems like he just keeps getting better. I thought the routes he ran and the catches he made were nothing short of spectacular, with the go route, the two touchdown catches, the third-down conversion on the corner route in front of our bench. He’s a tremendous receiver, and he had some production against us.’’

November 2012: "They moved him around a little in the past, but not much. Now he's Hines Ward. He's in motion a lot. He's blocking. He cracking. He's doing a lot of things Hines Ward did in Pittsburgh, but he's always been good at what he does. ... He's good at all of it. I don't really see Reggie Wayne much differently that how I see him in the past. There was some issues last year with their quarterback [Peyton Manning missed the season with a neck injury] and all that, but I didn't see any drop-off with Reggie Wayne as a football player. He's always looked good to me."

November 2014: “Yeah, he’s still really good at everything. [He’s] obviously a real smart and experienced guy; knows how to set up routes, make all of his routes look the same, does a great job of releasing and then at the top of his routes being able to create separation at just the right time when the quarterback is ready to throw. He’s been a key guy for them in critical situations and third down-type situations. I’m sure that there’s a lot of confidence that he’s going to be open, and he usually is. Excellent hands; made a lot of tough catches. They move him around. He plays a decent amount in the slot, but also out on the perimeter where we saw him for so many years in their former offensive system. But he’s probably a little more in the slot now ... they move all those guys around so finding him is a problem. He’s still a very dangerous receiver, clutch player and a guy who really, when they need a play, they’re not afraid to go to him, and he’ll deliver for them.”

Wayne's production vs. New England. No player has caught more passes vs. New England in the Belichick Patriots era including playoffs (since 2000) than Wayne’s 79. Only Wayne’s former teammate Marvin Harrison (76 catches) has more receiving yards over that same time period vs. New England (including postseason). Including playoffs, Wayne has three career games with 100 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown against New England.

2005 Week 9 at Patriots (11/7/05): Wayne caught 9 passes for 124 yards, including a 10-yard TD with less than a minute remaining in the first half to give the Colts a 21-7 lead. The Colts won 40-21, snapping a streak of six straight losses, including playoffs, to the Patriots.

2007 Pro Bowl (2/10/07): Wayne and Belichick were on the same AFC squad that year. The AFC’s first score of the game came early in the second quarter when Carson Palmer went deep to the right and found Wayne for what turned out to be a 72-yard TD catch. Wayne led all players with 137 receiving yards.

2009 Week 10 at Colts (11/15/09): This game will always be remembered for Belichick going for it on fourth-and-2 from the Patriots' own 28-yard line with the lead. That is the case because on the fourth play after the turnover, Manning found Wayne for a 1-yard score that gave the Colts a 35-34 lead with under 30 seconds remaining. The play capped a 10-catch, 126-yard, 2-TD performance for Wayne. It was the first time a player had at least 10 catches, 125 receiving yards and 2 receiving touchdowns against the Patriots in the Belichick era.

2010 Week 11 at Patriots (11/21/10): Wayne led all receivers with 8 catches and 107 yards, but it wasn’t enough as the Patriots held on for a 31-28 victory. His 11-yard TD in the second quarter was the last time Wayne has found the end zone against the Patriots.
