Bill De Blasio Shooting, A pellet shooting left a member of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's security team injured on Sunday, and a 19-year-old suspect was later arrested near Gracie Mansion.
Authorities told the New York Post that a plainclothes female member of the security team was shot in the back with a pellet gun about 7:15 p.m. Sunday. Officers identified an open window in a nearby apartment and claimed to have seen a pair of moving curtains and a silhouette.
A doorman helped authorities locate an apartment where they came in contact with a man, identified as Michael Verbitsky, and his 18-year-old girlfriend Gabrielle Gleyerman. The two refused to let police enter, telling them to get a search warrant, according to the Post.
Officers then took them into custody after Verbitsky and Gleyerman attempted to leave the apartment through a basement. Police said they found an air gun hidden in a drop ceiling of the apartment.
Verbitsky was charged with assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a forged instrument, criminal possession of a weapon 4, and criminal mischief, ABC7 reported.
Meanwhile the injured officer was transported to Lenox Hill Hospital, where she was treated and released, according to WPIX-TV.
The apartment where Verbitsky was located was described as being in a "super wealthy" area, the television station noted.
"You know it's not cheap to live there," neighbor Joseph Hummel said to WPIX-TV. "Anyone living there can afford to be doing something better than shooting a pellet gun out the window."
Neighbors told the television station that there were two other recent incidents in which windows were shot out by pellet guns.
"Right across from the mayor's mansion, it's insane,” neighbor Kevin Flanagan said. "Cops all around. Guy's having fun or something and now it's going to ruin his life."
Police said that Verbitsky had been arrested six times before the current incident, including for a 2012 robbery in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn involving a snatched handbag. He was also arrested for graffiti in 2011.
