UN peacekeepers attacked Mali, The United Nations says six peacekeepers have been murdered and five injured in an assault on their escort in north Mali.
A statement by the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Mali says the assault happened Thursday morning while the guard watched the street in the middle of Goundam and Timbuktu, around 45 kilometers (27 miles) south of Timbuktu. It said the injured are being emptied and reinforcements are being sent to the assault site, including helicopters for air support.
The U.N. mission in Mali said two vehicles were also destroyed.
It was indistinct who staged the assault yet Tuareg camp residents in the range said they saw a jihadist signal on the attackers' vehicles.
U.N. Mali emissary Mongi Hamdi denounced the assault, saying those responsible should be conveyed to justice.
