Russia orders quicker build-up of military facilities in Kurile Islands, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Monday requested the accelerating of development of military and regular citizen base on a chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean where Moscow and Tokyo have rival regional cases.
Disagreement about the islands, known as the Kuriles in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan, has strained relations between the two nations since World War Two, when Soviet powers possessed four islands at the southern end of the chain.
Shoigu was talking in Russia's Far East city of Vladivostok while investigating the eastern military locale, his service said in an announcement. It didn't give more detail.
Moscow has chafed Tokyo as of late by having state authorities visit the island tie and venturing up military exercises there. Japan says the islands are a piece of its domain and needs Moscow to hand them over.
