Lawsuit: CVS had workers racially profile shoppers

Lawsuit: CVS had workers racially profile shoppers, Managers at CVS Pharmacy Inc stores in New York City obliged loss anticipation staff to racially profile shoppers and subjected minority employees to racist slurs, a lawsuit against the Rhode Island-based organization guaranteed.

The proposed class activity lawsuit was recorded on Wednesday in government court in Manhattan by four dark and Hispanic previous CVS "store detectives" who guaranteed their bosses and some store managers requested them to track minority customers.

"(Supervisors) would give these directions notwithstanding when there was no indication the dark shopper was going to steal anything, and would never give such directions concerning white shoppers," the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit, which also named several managers as defendants, guaranteed dark and Hispanic employees were subjected to racial slurs and that the four plaintiffs were let go for complaining about discrimination. It guaranteed violations of the New York Human Rights Law and a similar city law prohibiting racial discrimination by employers.

Carolyn Castel, a spokeswoman for CVS Health Corp said the organization was "shocked" by the lawsuit and would battle the claims.

"We serve all communities and we don't endure any strategy or practice that discriminates against any gathering," she said.

The lawsuit comes around a year after Macy's Inc and Barneys consented to pay $650,000 and $525,000, respectively, to settle complaints that they harassed dark customers.

The lawsuit said the plaintiffs would soon record complaints with the U.S. Measure up to Employment Opportunity Commission, which would permit them to include claims in the case.

The case is Simpson v. CVS Pharmacy Inc, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 15-cv-4261.
