But after she moved to Hollywood, van Straten became all too aware of how damaging the sun’s rays can be. It started with a call from back home.
“Shortly after I relocated to California to pursue a career as an actress, my dad was diagnosed with melanoma,” says Van Straten, 48. “He started undergoing treatment. Then one day, I received a call that he had passed out. The cancer had spread to his brain, and he died soon after.”
Now, the actress – who played notable guest roles on “Seinfeld” and other shows before taking on supernatural characters in “True Blood” and “Once Upon a Time” – is using her high profile to raise awareness about melanoma prevention.
