Fire chief says blaze destroys historic stadium in Oregon

Fire chief says blaze destroys historic stadium in Oregon,A dynamite flame pulverized Eugene's notable Civic Stadium on Monday evening and provoked the provisional clearing of a two-square zone, the flame boss said.

Flame teams discovered flares shooting double the tallness of the structure when they were called to the stadium at around 5:30 p.m., police representative John Hankemeier said. Smoke was noticeable all through the city, which is around 100 miles south of Portland.

The stadium's dry, prepared timber brought about the burst to spread rapidly, Eugene-Springfield Fire Chief Randy Groves said after the flame was controlled at around 7 p.m.

He said the reason is under scrutiny. Nobody was hurt.

The stadium was endorsed by voters in 1938 amid the Great Depression and opened that same year. Work was given by the Works Progress Administration, and materials were given by loggers in the zone. The Eugene Emeralds, a small time group, had been a long-term inhabitant, yet cleared in 2009.

A not-for-profit gathering of group activists purchased it in April, with arrangements to in the end fabricate a soccer field and a recreation center on the property."We're truly sorrowful," said Derek Johnson, fellow benefactor of the Eugene Civic Alliance, which worked for quite a long time to secure the stadium from the city of Eugene. "It's a hard day.

"When I first listened, I was urgently trusting that something could be spared of the stadium," he told The Register-Guard daily paper (http://is.gd/MxoQmT). "It's a grand structure however it was wood, and that was one of the parts of it that was truly lovely. However, that wood ... that is an impermanent structure."

One observer said he saw the flame begin.

"I looked over and there was a little fire, only a few feet wide, inside the press box, around 20 to 30 feet up from home plate," said Danny Sales, South Eugene High's head baseball mentor.

Deals said he instantly called 911.

"Also, when I got off the telephone with the administrator, the entire stadium was ablaze," he said.
