Duggars Fox News, The Duggars' Fox News interview is already raising eyebrows, and it hasn't even aired yet. The network is receiving criticism for giving Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar a platform to defend their decision to cover up the sexual crimes of their son, Josh Duggar. There's also some concern that the network won't ask the Duggars any tough questions about their actions.
A May 30 report by Politics USA calls the Fox News' interview with the Duggars a "new low" for the network. It will air Wednesday night during "The Kelly File," and Megyn Kelly will give Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar an opportunity to do everything they can to tug at the heartstrings of sympathetic Fox News viewers. Jim Bob and Michelle might be doing the interview as a last-ditch effort to save their TLC reality series, "19 Kids and Counting." According to the Hollywood Reporter, "19 Kids and Counting" lost multiple advertisers after Josh Duggar confessed to sexually molesting multiple underage girls, including a few of his little sisters.
"Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are pulling from page one of the Republican playbook. When in trouble, run to Fox News," Jason Easley writes of the Duggars' decision to sit down with Megyn Kelly. "They aren’t going to admit their own wrongdoing and take responsibility for their actions. The Duggar parents are going to go on Fox News and talk about how the left and the media are out to get them."
Jezebel writer Stassa Edwards also worries that the Duggars' Fox News interview will be "yet another attempt to emphasize 'forgiveness' for their son over the lives of their daughters." Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have been harshly criticized for seeming to care more about protecting Josh Duggar from being prosecuted by the law than protecting his young victims. The little girls were forced to live in the same house as their abuser for years, and Josh never suffered any legal repercussions for his actions.
According to Media Matters, Fox News has been much easier on the Duggars than other news networks. CNN and MSNBC spent about an hour apiece reporting on the family between May 21 and May 25, but Fox News spent less than two minutes on the scandal. It became an extremely hot topic online after Josh Duggar confessed to his crimes and resigned from the Family Research Council, so it's shocking that the network dedicated so little time to the story. Perhaps the news network didn't want to draw attention to the family's dark past because they have close ties to Republican presidential candidates like Rick Santorum and former Fox News host Mike Huckabee.
Fox News' decision to ignore the scandal did end up paying off in a big way, but it remains to be seen if Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar actually answer any tough questions about Josh Duggar's sexual molestation and their attempts to cover it up -- the entire interview could end up consisting of nothing but talk about forgiveness, praying, and how Christians like the Duggars are being persecuted by anyone who dares to criticize their bad behavior.
