Circus Elephant Kills Man, A German man taking his customary morning walk was killed by an elephant which had gotten away from a nearby carnival, police said Saturday.
The 65-year-old man was strolling in the forested areas close Buchen, a town in southwest Germany, when the African elephant assaulted him shortly after 5 a.m., said Heidelberg police representative Yvonne Schmierer.
She declined to say what wounds the anonymous man endured.
The 34-year-old female elephant, called "Baby," was caught and came back to the bazaar.
Police are presently researching whether somebody let the elephant out of its safe nook, and why the creature acted forcefully toward the man.
"There's confirmation of outsider contribution," said Schmierer. "Possibly somebody forgot to close the nook, or the elephant was discharged purposefully."
German news office dpa reported that the elephant had beforehand harmed individuals.
It cited a delegate of the German branch of every living creature's common sense entitlement bunch PETA calling for authorities to detract the elephant from the bazaar.
