Norwegian Cruise Pool Drown, A 10-year-old girl drowned aboard the Norwegian Gem cruise ship, immediately diverting the ship to its nearest port in Florida. The girl was found unresponsive in the ship’s pool as it sailed about 75 miles offshore of Myrtle Beach, North Carolina on Sunday, according to MSN News on May 19.
The medical team on board the Norwegian Gem were beckoned to the ship’s pool deck where they found the child unresponsive. The team worked extensively attempting to revive the girl by administering CPR and “full emergency care,” but it was to no avail, according to a statement released by the cruise line.
Fox News today reports that Petty Officer 2nd Class Nate Littlejohn of the U.S. Coast Guard said the ship notified the Coast Guard of the child's death and then immediately set its course for the Florida coast. The ship pulled into Port Canaveral at about noon on Monday.
A spokesperson for the Norwegian Cruise Lines, Vanessa Picariello also said in the statement; "We are extremely saddened to have learned that a guest passed away on Sunday aboard the Norwegian Gem." The statement, which was emailed from the Miami-based cruise lines also conveyed; "We extend our deepest sympathies to the family during this very difficult time. Norwegian's care team is providing full assistance and support to the family."
Both the cruise line and the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the death of the 10-year-old child, but her name was not released. The officials making the statements would not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the child's drowning while at sea.
This seven-day cruise departed from New York on Saturday to cruise through the Bahamas and Florida. It was a vacation for one family that turned tragedy.
