Sperm whale met ROV in deep sea made a surprise for scientist, A rare encounter happened when a sperm whale came towards a group of researchers led by Robert Ballard, when they were at a depth of 1900 feet below sea level. The researchers said that the incident in which the sperm whale met with their ROV (Remotely Run Undersea Motor Vehicle) is a very rare occurrence.
Video of the meeting has been uploaded on YouTube and has attracted audiences of up to more than 1 million people. Scientists are very happy with the meeting and they said that because the whale was very close to them so they could see thespotted signs of whales’s nose. To note, the sperm whale is a loudest whale species among the other whales. The sperm whale is the world’s largest toothed predator.
The video of the encounter posted on YouTube has already crossed 1 million views. The oceanographers watching the whale move around the ROV sound very excited and happy at the chance of a lifetime, meeting a whale at such close quarters. In fact it was so close; they could see the spotted marks on its nose.
The sperm whale is the loudest species on Earth also called cachalot. It can make calls up to 230 decibels. It is very intelligent with a massive brain of twenty pounds. Sperm whale is considered as one of the largest toothed predators in the world. It lives for about 60 years and grows to about 60 feet long. In the Age of whaling, a lot of them were hunted for their wax-like spermaceti, used as a lubricant and in fuel lamps and candles. It is considered an endangered species now.
Ballard said that the encounter with the whale was totally unexpected. Sperm whales are very rare in the Louisiana water. The probability of the occurrence is very low and it caught the team of researchers totally off-guard.
Although very rare, this is not the first such an encounter reported in deep ocean. About 6 months ago there was a chance encounter with a Black Seadevil deep under the sea.
