Sam Smith Would Rather Be Called A Gay Slur Than Fat, Sam Smith has always been vocal about his identity as a gay man, as well as his struggles with weight. Perhaps that has shaped the slimmed-down singer's views on name-calling.
"If someone called me fat, that affects me way more than someone calling me a f-----," Smith said in an interview with Australia's 60 Minutes. "I think just because I've accepted that, if someone calls me a f-----, it's like, I am gay and I'm proud to be gay so there's no issues there."
Being "fat," on the other hand, is "something I can change."
Smith, who recently shed 14 pounds, also opened up about his lifelong battle with weight.
"When I was at school and wasn't having a great time or when music wasn't going very well," the 22-year-old Brit said. "I would eat, eat. Eating would make me feel better, when I felt lonely I would eat."
Not everyone will agree with Smith's take on fat-shaming versus gay slurs, but it's clear weight has been a sensitive issue for him. Here's hoping he forgets the haters — whatever they're saying.
