Plano West football star arrested on evading arrest charge, Kemp police say the Plano West football player who was arrested on a charge of evading arrest was speeding and ran through a stop sign before he was was pulled over Saturday.

About 7:20 p.m., a Ford pickup driven by Jamabo got off State Highway 175 at a high speed. When an officer tried to pull the truck over, Jamabo sped through a stop sign and turned onto State Highway 274, Kemp Police Chief Robert Walker said.The truck was swerving and speeding in the turning lane past other vehicles. Walker said the truck’s occupants also threw objects out of the windows “having total disregard for the public safety of others on the road.”

Eventually the truck stopped and Jamabo got out of the vehicle as instructed by the officer, he said.

The passengers — a 19-year-old man, 18-year-old woman and a juvenile — were all detained and given citations for being minors in possession of alcohol and minor consumption of alcohol. Police have not identified them.

Jamabo was arrested and booked into the Kaufman County jail on a charge of evading arrest.

“There was a suspicion of it because there was a bottle of alcohol,” Walker said of the possibility of drunk driving.

Asked why police did not breathalyze or test Jamabo’s sobriety, Walker said “that will all be in the report.”

Jamabo posted $7,500 bond about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Original item at 8 a.m.: A Plano West High School football player who was one of the most sought-after college recruits nationwide was arrested early Sunday on a charge of fleeing police in a vehicle, records show.

UCLA recruit Soso Jamabo, whose legal name is Sotonye Josiah Jamabo, was booked into the Kaufman County Jail around 1:30 a.m., online records show.

Jamabo, 19, was held on a charge of evading arrest with a vehicle. He was also given written warnings for minor consumption of alcohol, minor in possession of alcohol, speeding, driving without a license and disregarding a stop sign.

It’s unclear whether Jamabo has an attorney. He remained jailed Sunday and was awaiting arraignment as of 1:45 p.m., the Kaufman County sheriff’s office said.

More details about the police allegations weren’t immediately available. Kemp police, who arrested Jamabo, didn’t respond to a request for information.

UCLA Associate Athletic Director Josh Rupprecht said in an email that the team is “aware” of Jamabo’s reported arrest.

“We are obviously concerned about these reports and are currently gathering more information,” Rupprecht said. “As this is a continuing process, we will withhold further comment until the appropriate time.”Jamabo may have been at Plano West’s senior prom earlier in the night. A photo uploaded to Twitter around 6 p.m. Saturday shows Jamabo in a suit posing with a date who’s wearing a long gown. She wrote it was “prom.” Jamabo retweeted the photo.

Plano ISD spokeswoman Lesley Range-Stanton could not confirm whether Jamabo attended the school’s prom Saturday night at Plano Centre.amabo was one of the most sought-after football prospects in the nation for the Class of 2015, ranked No. 22 overall by Rivals.com.

The 6-2, 200-pound running back was named USA Today first-team all-American following his senior season, in which he rushed for 2,279 yards and 44 touchdowns.

The five-star recruit made national news during his recruiting process, when a joke he told on WFAA-TV (Channel 8) — saying his college choice had narrowed to University of Phoenix and ITT Tech – went viral. He picked UCLA over a host of other offers, including Notre Dame, Texas and Texas A&M.

He was also a starter on the Plano West basketball team, which won the Class 6A state title in March.
