Navajo Nation Election, Navajo Nation voters are choosing a new president on Tuesday, nearly five months after the election originally was scheduled.
Joe Shirley Jr., Russell Begaye and their running mates are crisscrossing the vast reservation and speaking on the radio, reaching out to any undecided voters and encouraging everyone to vote. They will end the day in the tribal capital of Window Rock to await election results among supporters.
The path to the presidential contest was fraught with court challenges, protests and attempts to switch up election law. It all started when a candidate was challenged over his ability to speak fluent Navajo. Chris Deschene ultimately was disqualified, and Begaye moved on to the general election.
About 120,000 Navajos are expected to vote. The new leaders will be sworn in May 12.
