Megan Huntsman, six terms of 30 years to life for murdering 6 of her children, The state of Utah and those around the United States that have been following the case of a young mother accused of murdering and concealing the death of 6 of her own children were outraged when a Utah court dropped six-30 year to life sentences on the serial killer.
Now while the term serial killer should be reserved for someone who has killed at least 2 individuals with a cooling down period, this mother killed 6 kids between 1996 and 2006 making her one sick serial killer preying on her own infant children. Megan Huntsman admitted that she had given birth to seven children over the 10-year period but because she was too high on methamphetamine to care for the children, she decided to suffocate them or strangle them, then place their lifeless bodies in cardboard boxes wrapped in plastic and stored in her garage. The sick waste of human breath was in court Monday where she was formally sentenced for the murders to six terms of 30-years to life, which means she must serve 120 years before she would be eligible for any form of parole, as three terms must be served consecutively and the other three concurrently.
Now that Huntsman will have plenty of time in prison to think about how she ended up there, let’s take a look back at how Huntsman was discovered to be the monster she is in the first place. In April of 2014, Huntsman estranged husband was cleaning out of the garage of his family home that Huntsman once shared with him in Pleasant Grove, Utah. While cleaning out the garage the estranged husband located a body of an infant, which would be one of 7 bodies that investigators would later find, deeming that Huntsman had killed 6 while the 7th child was born stillborn. The bodies of the infants were wrapped in towels or shirts, wrapped up with plastic wrap, placed in cardboard boxes, sealed them with some form of electrical tape, and stored in the garage next to the Christmas ornaments. When interrogated, Huntsman admitted to police that she had suffocated or strangled her children, but that she had lost count of how many she had killed, while she had 3 other children living in the home at the time of the pregnancies and murders, yet no one seemed to know that Huntsman had been pregnant seven times. In February, 2015 Huntsman pled guilty to 6 counts of murder, leaving Utah County Attorney, Jeff Buhman to say “obviously this was a very heinous crime, something that we haven’t see in Utah or Utah County before”. Going on to talk about the Huntsman’s motive for the killings “we know there was some drug use, probably a significant amount, but there really isn’t a good explanation”. Well Mr. Buhman, I disagree that there really isn’t a good reason, I mean no drug use isn’t a good reason to go out and kill 6 of your own kids and hide their bodies for more than 10 years, but drug use definitely leads to bad decision making and plenty of children have died at the hands of parents that were engaged in drug use, specifically methamphetamine and heroin.
Nonetheless, Huntsman’s estranged husband, Darren West was in federal prison on Methamphetamine related charges from 2006 to 2014, and found the body of one of his children shortly after he was released. He was deemed to be the father of all 7 of the children found in the garage, but police do not believe he was involved in this. I cannot for the life of me understand how a father who had been living in the home with a wife and their three living children could not tell that his wife had been pregnant some 7 times and that there were no children to show for it. I do not comprehend how a father could not question what was going on with his wife, until he came home to find the dead bodies of his own flesh and blood wrapped in plastic and in boxes just rotting away for 10 years.
