California Pipeline Explosion, Jersey City and Bayonne have reiterated their opposition to the gas pipeline proposed for both municipalities, and are now pointing to the explosion in San Bruno, Calif., to bolster their arguments.
Jersey City even may send its Office of Emergency Management director to California to find out first-hand what caused the explosion.
Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith says the two cities are too densely populated to take a chance that the same sort accident won't happen here.
Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy a similar explosion here would be "catastrophic."
Spectra has proposed the underground gas pipeline to run through an existing pipeline in Linden, through Staten Island, Bayonne and Jersey City before its destination in Manhattan to serve Con Edison. The pipeline that exploded in California is owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Co.
