Bill and Denise Richard

Bill and Denise Richard, Among a sea of elite athletes and supporting friends and family, bombs hit the Boston Marathon on April 15, killing 3 people and injuring at least 176.

One of the people killed was 8-year-old “adorable little boy” Martin Richard.Waiting in eager anticipation to hug his father, Bill Richard, who was running in the marathon, Martin lost his life during the senseless attack.

His mother, Denise Richard, sustained a brain injury and his 6-year-old sister Jane lost a leg in the blast. Martin’s 12-year-old brother Henry escaped injury.

My dear son Martin has died from injuries sustained in the attack on Boston. My wife and daughter are both recovering from serious injuries. We thank our family and friends, those we know and those we have never met, for their thoughts and prayers. I ask that you continue to pray for my family as we remember Martin. We also ask for your patience and for privacy as we work to simultaneously grieve and recover. Thank you.”

According to friends, the Richards are a “typical, all-American, lovely family. It’s devastating. He was an adorable little boy,” the source added. “It’s very hard to talk about. He was a sweet little kid.”

Today, my heart is heavy as I write this post.

Do I have any solutions or impecable words of wisdom? Not really. It’s hard to make sense of something so senseless. And as a mother-of-three, it’s inconceivable to comprehend the loss of an innocent child in such a violent manner.

My hope is that sharing the Richards’ names and their precious family pictures will humanize this tragic experience. Often we’ll hear death tolls and think to ourselves, ‘It could’ve been worse.’ But right now, I can’t think of anything worse than losing a child, sustaining a life-changing injury, and having a child lose a limb.

For now, I will reflect on Martin’s simple yet perfect poster above.
