Punched ref dies: Referee dead after being brutally punched during game, Punched ref dies update: Ricardo Portillo, 46, of Salt Lake City, died Saturday night at the hospital where he was being treated after he was punched by a 17-year-old goalie, said police spokesman Justin Hoyal.
According to a Yahoo! report dated May 5, police filed charges against the player, a 17-year-old member of a recreational soccer league, for attacking Portillo after the referee called a foul and the teen was issued a yellow card.
"The suspect was close to Portillo and punched him once in the face as a result of the call,"Hoyal said in a press release.
The assailant was booked into a juvenile detention center juvenile on suspicion of aggravated assault. Hoyal said officials discussed the presentation of additional charges in the death of Portillo.
After spending two days in critical condition in a hospital, the referee died from complications related to injuries suffered in the attack. According to the Associated Press, Portillo had been hospitalized at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, outside of Salt Lake City after receiving the punch.
The ref felt unwell immediately after receiving the punch and began to vomit blood, which prompted the 911 call. Portillo suffered swelling in his brain and his death followed shortly after the attack.
Hoyal said an autopsy is planned. No cause of death was released.
The goalkeeper, despite being 17-years-old, could face felony charges as an adult.
