Mexican Man, 33, Dies After Falling Off Border Wall in Arizona
Mexican Man, 33, Dies After Falling Off Border Wall in Arizona, A 33-year-old Mexican national died in the custody of the Customs and Border Protection agency on Saturday after suffering a fall from the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
CBP announced the man's death on Sunday, but did not identify him.
The 33-year-old died six days after being found by Border Patrol agents assigned to the Yuma Border Patrol Sector on July 26.
The man had "claimed to be injured after falling off the border wall near County 23rd in an open field," CBP said in a statement.
Border Patrol agents sought to administer aid to the man, the agency said.
Emergency Medical Services and the San Luis Fire Department were also called and transported the 33-year-old to the Yuma Regional Medical Center.
The man did not survive his injuries, CBP said, before expressing condolences to his family.
The incident comes months after a 19-year-old pregnant woman from Guatemala died after falling while trying to climb the border wall near El Paso, Texas.
According to a statement from the Guatemalan Embassy at the time of the incident, Girón Luna was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
She underwent multiple surgeries, but did not survive her injuries.
Doctors had tried to deliver her baby by emergency C-section, but they were unsuccessful.
Gloria Chavez, CBP's El Paso sector chief, suggested that "human smugglers" were to blame for the 19-year-old's death.
Accusing smugglers of having "encouraged her and helped her climb" the border wall, Chavez said in a statement that CBP would "engage our law enforcement partners in Mexico to find those responsible for placing these lives in danger."
It is unclear whether smugglers are believed to have played a role in the 33-year-old man's death on Saturday.
President Donald Trump, who has pushed to see at least 450 miles of his long-promised border wall built before the end of the year, has previously responded to images of migrants getting stuck while trying to climb his border wall as a "beautiful sight."
During a campaign rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in January, the president remarked on how difficult the wall had been made to climb.
"They go to the top, you know, that panel on top is called a 'climb resister.' It's very slippery and very hot. It's very hot," Trump said. "And they got stuck on the wall, they couldn't get off the wall. You see that?"
"I was watching the news. I was surprised that the fake news showed it. And I said, 'isn't that a beautiful sight'," the president said. "They couldn't get over the wall. Couldn't get over it," he said.
