GE Deal Gives China’s Haier Long-Sought Overseas Foothold

GE Deal Gives China’s Haier Long-Sought Overseas Foothold, US industrial giant General Electric announced Friday the sale of its appliances business to China's Qingdao Haier for 5.4 billion dollars.

GE had previously been due to sell the unit to Swedish rival manufacturer Electrolux for $3.3 billion but the deal ran into opposition from US competition authorities.

Both companies said last month that the deal was off after the US Justice Department said it would hand Electrolux a US market share of some 40 percent.

GE said in a statement that its sale to the Chinese group had received the green light from its board of directors and that of Haier, but remained subject to Haier shareholder and regulatory approval.

"GE Appliances is performing well and there was significant interest from potential buyers, helping drive a good deal which will benefit our investors, customers and employees," GE chairman and chief executive Jeff Immelt said in the statement.
