Report: Rams don’t expect Todd Gurley to play in Week 1

Report: Rams don’t expect Todd Gurley to play in Week 1, St. Louis Rams rookie running back Todd Gurley will have to wait a bit longer to make his NFL debut. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher told the local media that Gurley will not play in Week 1, via StLouisRams.com:

“Gurley’s not going to play this week. He had two treatment sessions today, and he’s doing well. We’ll see how he is during the week."

Fisher continues to take a patient approach by sitting Gurley, who is recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in November 2014. The 21-year-old was just recently cleared to partake in all aspects of practice, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner. He has a lot of work to do in order to acclimate to the NFL game.

It would be a harsh introduction to have Gurley see his first NFL action against one of the most ferocious defenses in the NFL in the Seattle Seahawks. The Washington Redskins, the Rams' Week 2 opponents, might be a better first test for the rookie.

To make matters worse, running back Tre Mason has had injury issues of his own and is questionable for Week 1, according to the NFL on Twitter. Evan Tarracciano of RotoExperts reported that Benny Cunningham would start against the Seahawks if Mason is unable to go.

Once Gurley is ready to go, though, expect him to step in at first string, as the Rams hope that the 10th pick in the 2015 draft can exude the kind of play that made him one of the most electrifying backs in the league at the University of Georgia.
