Harry Connick Jr. Quentin Alexander

Harry Connick Jr. Quentin Alexander, Things got heated on American Idol as season 14 finalist Quentin Alexander seemingly insulted the show by calling it “wack” during the live broadcast. The remark prompted a verbal smackdown from judge Harry Connick Jr., who chastised the contestant: “Quentin, if it’s that wack, you can always go home,” he said. “Idol is paying a lot of money to give you this experience, and for you to say that to the hand that is feeding you right now... is highly disrespectful.”

Alexander -- voted safe by Idol viewers -- had just wrapped a rousing performance of Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way” when he decided to voice his anger at the program for designating Rayvon Owen and Joey Cook as the bottom two.

“This sucks,” he told host Ryan Seacrest with a scowl. “You got two of the best vocalists sitting over there -- my best friend is sitting over there. This whole thing is wack.”

Seacrest attempted to defuse the situation by saying the bottom two could be anybody -- even your friend -- but Alexander wasn’t having it and proceeded to saunter right up to the judges' table to explain himself. The tense moment prompted immediate reaction on social media, while at the Idol studio, the sense of discomfort was palpable.

“For my personal feelings, it sucks to see two people who I have grown to love go home, so that is what I mean by it being wack," Alexander explained. "So I am not disrespecting this competition."

Jennifer Lopez later cheered up Alexander, telling the singer that showing emotion is a badge of artistry. Connick didn't refer to the confrontation on the second go-round, when Alexander performed Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence," but the finalist did, telling the audience, "It wasn't my intention to disrespect. ... I couldn't help but let it out."
