Tanzania national sentenced for smuggling heroin, A man from Tanzania was sentenced recently for smuggling heroin into the Washington Dulles International Airport.

According to a CBP press release dated May 3, 2013, Omar Mohammad Omar, 40, of Pemba, Tanzania, was sentenced on April 26, to 48 months of incarceration for the illegal importation of a controlled substance. CBP agents found about 7 pounds of heroin in the lining of his suitcase.

After CBP agents had Omar to empty his suitcase, they found that it remained unusually heavy for an empty case and they used an x-ray which showed anomalies on either side of his suitcase. After tearing into the lining they found four packages containing a brown, powdery substance. A sample field-tested positive for heroin. The heroin was estimated to have a street value of approximately $225,000.

The CBP then turned Omar over to special agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia prosecuted Omar.

The CBP reports that, during the fiscal year of Oct. 1, 2011 through Sept. 30, 2012, their agents at Dulles intercepted 16 such heroin smuggling cases with a total of over 61 pounds.
