Unsettled work week weather continues, trends cooler and drier by the weekend

Unsettled work week weather continues, trends cooler and drier by the weekend, The Capital Region will experience a few days of unsettled weather conditions thanks to several waves of low pressure riding along a stationary boundary settled just to our south. One such wave of low pressure was approaching the lower Hudson Valley early Wednesday morning, and will be off the New England coast by afternoon. The stationary boundary itself was draped from the eastern New England coast, back west and south to the through Texas, and then north and east, through the Pacific Northwest.

Two more areas of low pressure will impact the region through the end of the work week. The first of the two waves of low pressure is forecast to form over central Pennsylvania by nightfall Wednesday, and slowly work its way to the southern New England coast by Thursday morning, following a track not to dissimilar from the low pressure area that brought the rains to the region overnight last night and this morning. Thus, nearly a repeat of the precipitation scheme and timing is forecast once again tonight and into early Thursday for the region.

After a brief lull in the precipitation early on Thursday, the stationary boundary playinng host to the seemingly endless parade of impulses that brought all the unsettled weather for the week finally shows signs of becoming a true warm front. This looks to be in response to a final, and potent, area of low pressure moving from the central Plains to the upper Great Lakes during the Thursday afternoon to Friday morning time frame. The warm front looks to stay south of the region, as the low pressure area moves explosively north and east into southeastern Canada on Friday. The forecast movement will drag a strong cold front through the region during the day on Friday. Moderate, to at times, heavy rainfall will be possible with the passage of this feature over the region. In addition, areas of northern New York and northern New England may get cold enough for a wintry mix of precipitation on Friday, while as areas further south (i.e. the Mid and Lower Hudson Valley and the southern Catskills) may see a thunderstorm or two with the passage of the strong cold front Friday afternoon.

The weekend looks to trend toward drier and more sunny weather as high pressure builds into the region from the center of the nation. A strong west to northwesterly flow will be prevalent, keeping temperatures near to slightly below seasonal averages. The next weather system does not look to impact the region’s weather until early in the new work week.
